People say that ‘you are what you eat’ which, although it may sound bizarre, is actually a fairly-accurate saying. You see, if you eat vast quantities of junk food each day, you’ll look unhealthy, you’ll gain weight, you’ll feel like crap, and you’ll be incredibly unhealthy and will be putting your life at risk. If you follow a diet that is super-healthy however, consisting primarily of plenty of healthy and nutritious produce, you’ll look great, you’ll feel great, and you’ll be great. We men aren’t always the healthiest of individuals, but if you are worried your diet is lacking, here’s a look at a few common diet mistakes made by men, and what you can do to fix them.
Avoiding fats – When it comes to getting lean, both men and women are still making the mistake of avoiding all forms of fats at all costs. Decades ago, nutritionists and health “experts” would tell us t avoid fat no matter what. Fat was blamed for heart disease, cancer, strokes, heart attacks, obesity, and much more. While it is true that unhealthy trans fats, and processed, non-natural saturated fats are indeed bad for us, the healthy fats out there are actually incredibly beneficial for us. Natural saturated fats, monounsaturated fats, and polyunsaturated fats help lower dangerous cholesterol, they boost the metabolism, they improve cognitive health and function, and they can even help to burn fat. If you’re trying to get lean, don’t avoid healthy fats because your health and your waistline will pay the price.
Relying on supplements – The supplement industry is currently thriving, and rightly so. Health supplements can provide us with a whole variety of health advantages, but they can only do so much. Too many men out there are ignoring whole foods and are instead spending most of their money on supplements instead, when it should be the other way around. Supplements are designed to ‘supplement’ your diet, and to get the most out of them, they should be used in conjunction with a healthy and varied diet. First, make sure your diet consists of plenty of wholesome, healthy, and natural produce, and then look at going with a few good supplements such as a male enhancement supplement, or whey protein.
Cutting calories too low – If you’re sick and tired of having a beer gut and flabby pecs, you may decide that you need to lose weight. In order to burn fat, you need to create a caloric deficit. This means that you need to be consuming fewer calories than you are burning off each day. Too many men however, take things to the extreme and drop their calories too low. Men are generally bigger than women, and so they require more calories just for maintenance. Despite this, a lot of men often drop their caloric intakes dangerously low, which means that they are lacking certain nutrients, their energy levels will plummet, and ironically their metabolisms will slow down so losing weight becomes harder. If you’re looking to lose weight, aim for a deficit of between 300 and 500 cals below maintenance, depending on your size and activity levels. Anything lower is dangerous and detrimental to what you will be looking to achieve.
